The smallest of the 2019 gazettements and one of the smallest national parks in the country at 200 square kilometres, Ibanda-Kyerwa sits on the Kagera River in the far north-west, along the border with Rwanda. It had been a game reserve since 1974.
The country is savanna and riverine woodland along the Kagera, with buffalo, zebra, topi and hippo. Its position on an international river corridor gives it more ecological significance than its size suggests.
There is no tourism infrastructure to speak of. It is here for completeness of the national list.
