Public holidays in Tanzania

Tanzania observes sixteen public holidays. Eleven fall on the same calendar date every year. Five move: Good Friday and Easter Monday follow the Western Easter, and Eid el-Fitr, Eid el-Hajj and Maulid follow the Hijri calendar and are confirmed by moon sighting, so the dates below for those three are good estimates rather than settled facts.

The same holidays apply across the whole United Republic, mainland and Zanzibar alike.

This is the part most holiday listings leave out, and it is written into the law. Section 4 of the Public Holidays Act says that if a public holiday falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, the next following day, not being itself a public holiday, becomes a public holiday in lieu.

So a holiday landing on a weekend is not simply lost. In 2027 that applies six times:

Workers' Day falls on Saturday 1 May, so the day in lieu is expected to be Monday 3 May. Eid el-Hajj falls on Sunday 16 May, so the day in lieu is expected to be Monday 17 May. Nane Nane (Farmers' Day) falls on Sunday 8 August, so the day in lieu is expected to be Monday 9 August. Maulid Day falls on Saturday 14 August, so the day in lieu is expected to be Monday 16 August. Christmas Day falls on Saturday 25 December, so the day in lieu is expected to be Monday 27 December. Boxing Day falls on Sunday 26 December, so the day in lieu is expected to be Tuesday 28 December.

Christmas and Boxing Day are the awkward case: they fall on the Saturday and Sunday, and because the day in lieu cannot itself already be a public holiday, the substitute days run into the following week. The government's own published list is what settles the exact days, and it is worth checking it rather than assuming.

Planning further out. The fixed dates are certain; the Easter dates are arithmetic and equally certain; the three Islamic dates are astronomical predictions and will be confirmed only close to the time.

A distinction worth knowing if you are writing a contract or an HR policy. The Public Holidays Act commenced in 1920 and its Schedule names the days that are public holidays every year automatically. But section 3 also lets the President declare, by proclamation, any additional day to be a public holiday.

In the consolidated text of the Act as published by TanzLII — the version as at 31 July 2002 — three of the days everyone takes off are not in the Schedule: Karume Day (7 April), Saba Saba (7 July) and Nyerere Day (14 October). They are observed under the proclamation power, and in practice they are proclaimed every year without fail.

The Schedule also carries a quirk: it grants Eid el-Fitr two days and Eid el-Hajj one. Recent official lists have published a single date for each, so treat the second Eid day as something to confirm locally rather than to count on.

The practical rule: the operative list for any given year is the one the government publishes, not the Schedule. The Bank of Tanzania publishes a dated list annually, which is the most accessible official version.

Eid el-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, Eid el-Hajj (Eid al-Adha) falls during the pilgrimage month, and Maulid marks the Prophet's birthday. All three follow the Hijri calendar, which is lunar: its year is about eleven days shorter than the Gregorian one, so these holidays arrive roughly eleven days earlier each year.

Astronomical calculation predicts them accurately, but Tanzania — like much of the region — settles the date by actual sighting of the new moon, which can shift the day by one either way. A date more than a few weeks out is a forecast.

What this means in practice: for booking flights or planning a quarter, the estimates here are sound. For anything that turns on the exact day — a court date, a shipping deadline, a contract — wait for the announcement. Even officially published advance lists have had to move.

Good Friday and Easter Monday are a different case entirely. Easter is computed by a fixed rule, not observed, so those dates are already certain for every year in the table.

What remains of the current year. All four are fixed dates, so none of them can move.

Banks and government offices close, and that is the part that catches people out: a public holiday on either side of a weekend can mean three or four days without a bank, a visa office or a ministry.

Tourism runs through the holidays. National parks, lodges, tour operators and domestic flights work normally, and the coastal and safari businesses are often busiest on the days everyone else has off. If you are travelling, a public holiday will rarely change your plans — unless you needed a bank, an embassy or a government office.

Two holidays are worth planning around rather than through, because they are events in their own right: Nane Nane on 8 August, when the farmers' fairs run in each zone, and Saba Saba on 7 July, the Dar es Salaam international trade fair. Both fill hotels in the towns that host them.
