## The Ngoni, and the Maji Maji war

The **Ngoni** came from far to the south. Their ancestors were among the peoples scattered by the wars that went with the rise of the Zulu kingdom in the early nineteenth century; over decades of migration some crossed the Zambezi and moved north, and by the middle of the century they had settled this highland, built military states over the peoples already here, and raided widely.

In **1905** the **Maji Maji** war broke out against German rule. It began in the Matumbi hills of the south-east and spread across the colony, carried by the belief that a sacred water — *maji* — would turn German bullets to water. Ngoni fighters joined in thousands. The Germans answered with a scorched-earth campaign; the famine that followed did most of the killing, and estimates of the dead across the colony run from **75,000 to 300,000**. The war was over by **1907**.

On **27 February 1906** the Germans hanged the captured leaders of the resistance at the town that now carries the name of one of them, **Songea Lwafu Mbano**. The museum, the graves and the anniversary are described on the [Songea guide](https://seeyoutanzania.com/guides/songea), and the whole war on our page on [the Maji Maji war](https://seeyoutanzania.com/history/german-east-africa/maji-maji-war).

The missions arrived just before the war and stayed. Benedictine monks from St Ottilien founded **Peramiho** in **1898**; their bishop, **Cassian Spiss**, was killed in 1905 as the rising spread. The region remains strongly Catholic, and the abbey's hospital and schools are among its most important institutions. Much later, during Mozambique's war of independence, the border country was a restricted zone and suffered occasional Portuguese air attacks.

## Maize, coffee and coal

Ruvuma is one of the regions that feed the country. About **three-quarters** of its working people farm, and **maize** alone takes some 61% of the planted land, ahead of cassava, rice and beans. **Tobacco** and **sesame** are grown for cash.

In the west, the **Matengo** of **Mbinga** grow **arabica coffee** on hillsides worked by the **ngolo** system — grids of pits dug across the slope that trap rain, soil and cut grass, hold the hillside in place and fertilise the next crop. It has sustained intensive farming on hills that would otherwise wash away, and is one of the most studied indigenous farming systems in Africa. Ruvuma and Songwe together grow most of Tanzania's arabica; see [coffee in Tanzania](https://seeyoutanzania.com/sectors/agriculture/coffee). In the hot east around **Tunduru**, the crop is **cashew**.

Under the Mbinga hills lies the **Ngaka coalfield**, the largest working coal mine in the country, supplying cement plants around Tanzania and exporting to neighbouring states. In Namtumbo District, the **Mkuju River** uranium project opened a pilot plant in July 2025; both are covered on [mining in Tanzania](https://seeyoutanzania.com/sectors/mining). The coal, the crops and the road east towards Mtwara are what is changing the region's economy.

**What the region produces**

- **Maize:** About 61% of planted land
- **Cassava & rice:** The next largest crops
- **Coffee:** Arabica from the Matengo highlands
- **Cashew:** Tunduru, in the hot east
- **Coal:** The Ngaka field, in Mbinga

## From the Matengo hills to Lake Nyasa

The region is named for the **Ruvuma River**, which rises on the plateau near Songea and forms most of its southern border with Mozambique on the way to the Indian Ocean. The land runs from the **Matengo** and **Lukumburu** mountains in the west, both reaching about **2,000 m**, down to lowlands of barely **300 m** in the east. June to August can be cold in the Matengo highlands; October and November are the hottest months.

Its peoples include the **Ngoni**, the **Matengo** of the western highlands, the **Manda** and **Nyasa** along the lake, the **Yao**, and the **Ndendeule** and **Ngindo** to the north and east. Much of the region's public culture — the dance, the church calendar, the annual commemoration of 1906 — comes out of that mixture.

West of Mbinga the land falls to **Lake Nyasa**. **Mbamba Bay**, in Nyasa District, is the region's port: a small town with a sand beach, clear water and a handful of guesthouses, connected by lake ferry up the Tanzanian shore. It is one of the least-visited beautiful places in the country.

North of Songea, the wild country of **Nyerere National Park** — the largest national park in Tanzania — reaches down into Namtumbo District. Beyond it the region has five game-controlled areas, among them Undendeule and Liparamba.

## Towns, parks and places across Ruvuma Region

### Mbinga and the Matengo highlands (Highlands)

Coffee country west of Songea, terraced with the pit-cultivated ngolo system.

### Mbamba Bay (Lakeshore)

The region's Lake Nyasa port, in Nyasa District: sand, clear water and very few visitors.

### Peramiho (Monastery)

The Benedictine abbey founded in 1898 outside Songea, with a large hospital and schools.

### Tunduru (Town & district)

The hot eastern district on the road to Mtwara — cashew country, and gemstone diggings.

### Nyerere National Park (National park)

The southern reaches of Tanzania's largest national park extend into Namtumbo District.

## What to see

### The Matengo pit farms

*Farming landscape.* Hillsides dug into grids of pits around Mbinga — a farming system studied worldwide.

### The Mbuji rock

*Landmark.* A huge bare stone dome above the forest in Mbinga District.

### Mbamba Bay

*Lakeshore.* Lake Nyasa at the end of a long road west from Mbinga. Swimming, fishing boats and quiet.

### Nyerere National Park, Namtumbo

*National park.* The park's remote southern edge. Access is easier from the north, but the country here is genuinely wild.

## Before you go

- **Scale:** 63,669 km², about the size of Latvia. Songea to Mbamba Bay, or Songea to Tunduru, is a full day's drive.
- **Getting around:** A vehicle and driver, hired in Songea. Mbinga is a few hours west, and Mbamba Bay a rough descent beyond it.
- **Roads:** The rains, roughly November to April, make the lake road and the rural tracks hard going.
- **Borders:** Mozambique lies across the Ruvuma River to the south. Carry your passport when travelling near the border.
